Two men who persistently attacked a man at a bus stop on Christmas Day have been sentenced.

Brogen Bown, aged 25, and Wayne Maxwell, aged 34, punched the 23-year-old victim in the face during the incident which happened outside a shop in Newcastle Street, Worksop, at around 5.45pm.

The pair, who were drunk, set upon the victim after they had been talking. He had laughed at them and said something in their direction before Bown and Maxwell assaulted him, causing cuts and bleeding.

Officers were called and two suspects were swiftly arrested.

Bown, of Gateford Road, Worksop, and Maxwell, of Yeoman Close, Worksop, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday (27 September 2023).

Both men had pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Maxwell was sentenced to four months in prison.

Bown was handed a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and must complete 50 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Judge Rosalind Coe KC said: “It’s apparent you were all drunk and the victim was subjected to a prolonged series of assaults and blows.

“This was a persistent attack. You kept coming back at the victim. Whatever he said did not justify your actions.”

Detective Sergeant Nathan Bingham, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a sustained attack by Maxwell and Bown. The victim didn’t so much as raise a hand to them or put up a fight.

“Violence of this nature has no place on our streets, and we will continue to bring those involved in violent disorder before the court to face the consequences of their actions.”
